Smart Mobile Sees 36% Revenue Growth
Malaysian telecommunications company Axiata Group Berhad reported Wednesday that its Cambodian brand Smart has seen strong growth in the first nine months of the year, with revenue increasing by 36 percent compared with the same period last year. In its third quarter financial report, Axiata said that since the merger of its Hello network and Latelz Co. Ltd.’s Smart Mobile in February, Smart has seen “significant growth”—especially in its prepaid segment—driven by strong growth in data revenue and a greater penetration of smartphones in the market. Smart Mobile accounts for 2 percent of the group’s total revenue of $1.4 billion for the third quarter, compared with 1 percent during the same period last year. … The Cambodian telecoms market has been fueled by fierce competition and aggressive marketing tactics between Smart and local conglomerate Royal Group’s major network MobiTel, which has about 4 million subscribers placing it behind Smart which has about 5.4 million. …
